State of Vue 2021 Highlights — Two Reports Instead of One! - featured image

Vue 3 was released in September 2020, so we thought it’s high time to release the third edition of our State of Vue report. The first paper was downloaded by a total of 7k developers, CTOs, and product owners, and the second followed up on the case studies to see how the use of Vue evolved in the interviewed companies. We hope the third edition will be of even bigger help to the community and all the people interested in the awesome framework that Vue is.

This year, we’ve decided to prepare two versions of the report: Vue for Business 2021, and the traditionally technical State of Vue 2021.

In short: Vue for Business 2021 is our effort to take a look at the framework from the business perspective. State of Vue 2021 is a continuation of our efforts to promote this awesome framework by showing how it evolves technically and how it compares to other JavaScript technologies.

Let’s dive in!

Vue for Business 2021

Vue for Business paper is directed at those who leverage technology to build and develop businesses but are not into the nitty-gritty details that developers need. In this paper, you’ll see:

  • What Vue.js is.
  • How businesses can benefit from using the framework.
  • Real case studies of FindlayWebTech, BridgeU, Vue.js Amsterdam, Eve, Extradom, Coursedog, and Passionate People.
  • Experts’ opinions on Vue, and what kind of projects it's best for.
  • Where Vue stands compared to other techs for app development.
  • How to decide if Vue is the right tech for your company.

What’s Vue and why do companies use it

The first section gives an overview of Vue development is and its most important and common benefits from the business perspective.

Prototypes and MVPs can be built quickly to test new ideas. After this stage, when it’s decided to move forward with developing, this framework scales well; all the way up to enterprise level applications. If you’re not working on a new project, Vue can be used to add new features to one you’re already working on.

You benefit from Vue’s extensive official libraries. They provide premade features or modules to speed up development. Let’s not forget to mention the speed of products developed with Vue. Thanks to high performing server side rendering (see more below) you can expect quick, performant apps.

How modern business leverages Vue

The second section is a close look at how modern businesses leverage Vue and its unique characteristics.

We no longer need to have a large team dedicated to work on our internal projects because the lean team we have is able to focus on implementing new features instead of implementing the underlying framework to work faster.

The team members who are able to join us for a short time are also able to quickly get up to speed and collaborate thanks to the shared architecture and possibilities offered by the combination of Vue and Nuxt.

We’re also sharing the opinions of three experts on what kind of projects Vue is best for.

If you need a full-featured framework, Vue.js, with its rich ecosystem, is an apparent good fit. If you already have lots of customization in the front end layer, you can also bring in Vue.js for its reactivity utilities, or use it for simple component rendering.

Though, there is one area that Vue.js fits particularly well: if you are not sure how big the project will grow into and want to start with a simple but scalable architecture, Vue.js is here for you.

Is Vue the right technology for your project?

And finally, we’re looking at Vue as a part of a vast JavaScript ecosystem. We’re comparing it to two well-known and widely used alternatives: React, and Angular, and to a new up-and-comer: Svelte.

State of Vue 2021

State of Vue 2021 is a curated promotion of this awesome framework by showing how it evolves technically and how it compares to other JavaScript technologies. Here, we’re sharing:

  • What’s new in Vue 3.
  • How companies such as GitLab, Wikimedia, or Storyblok use Vue.
  • How developers use Vue in practice.
  • What people proficient in Vue.js value the most in this framework and what they'd see changing next.
  • How Vue's popularity is trending compared to other techs and does it place itself in terms of technical aspects.

What’s new in Vue 3

Here, we highlight the main changes in Vue 3, and briefly explain:

  • How the new version is even smaller
  • Why it’s faster
  • What the Composition API adds
  • What the Teleport feature is

Vue popularity over the years

Then we take a detailed look at how Vue’s popularity has been developing over the past years when compared to React and Angular. We used the following sources:

  • Statista
  • HackerRank and JetBrains surveys
  • BuiltWith
  • NPMtrends
  • NPM-stat
  • SimilarTech for market share and web usage stats
  • GitHub dependents
  • StackOverflow surveys and questions posted on forums
  • Google Trends and even social media followers

The essence of this analysis: Vue is doing good and it’s here to stay.

Vue survey results (1635 respondents)

Next, you can read what we found from surveying 1635 software experts about their take on Vue. Some key insights you’ll find:

Vue experts on using Vue

You’ll also have the possibility to read what six Vue experts have to say about the framework. We asked them:

  • Why do you use Vue and what do you like most about it?
  • A new version of Vue was recently released — are you planning to adopt it anytime soon?
  • What's the most exciting project you've done with Vue?
  • For what type of projects would you recommend to try out Vue?
  • What is the most burning problem you'd see Vue as a developing framework tackling next?

Opening the section is Damian Dulisz, Vue core team member, Vue consultant, and Tech Lead at Coursedog, talking about what is so exciting about the new Composition API.

Vue comparison with other techs

And to close things up, we’re providing you with a thorough analysis of Vue compared to React, Angular, and Svelte. Comparisons are important aspects of picking the best technology for your project, so we decided to include this overview in both papers. In the State of Vue 2021, however, you can expect more technical details than in Vue for Business 2021. Where we look at these aspects:

  • Technology overview
  • Popularity and support
  • Documentation
  • Performance
  • Scalability
  • Syntax
  • Mobile development

Get the report you need

This year’s reports are the most comprehensive to date, and we’ve worked closely with Vue experts and members of the Vue core team to bring this knowledge to you. Now you can simply pick which aspect of Vue is most interesting to you. The technical one? Pick State of Vue 2021. The business side? Go with Vue for Business 2021.

As a last note, you’ll most likely notice that the State of Vue 2021 is non-gated, whereas to download Vue for business 2021 we ask for your email. The reason for this is that with State of Vue 2021 we’re sending a token of appreciation to the open-source community of Vue. But we’ve also worked really hard to bring the papers to where they are, and we want to stay in touch with those who appreciate this (we never spam our subscribers) — hence, we want to get to know those who take interest in the Vue for Business 2021 report.
