The company and product

Vave Health is a company founded in 2015 in Silicon Valley with a mission to make ultrasound technology limitless—available anywhere patients need it. Since receiving FDA clearance in 2019, Vave Health has won 6 awards and conducted over 1 million medical scans.

Ultrasound is a critical technology that can help diagnose and monitor many medical conditions, but its widespread adoption has been limited by high costs, large and heavy traditional machines.

Vave was created to solve this major problem: two-thirds of the world's population can't access medical imaging. The founder of Vave, Dr. Amin Nikoozadeh, saw this gap while working on ultrasound technology at Stanford.

The company developed portable, affordable ultrasound devices with dedicated software that made ultrasound technology accessible to more healthcare providers and patients around the world.

The Challenge

Vave turned to Monterail with a need for further development of their hybrid mobile apps. They faced several critical technical and user experience challenges that hindered their growth.

Vave Health's existing solution required a comprehensive evaluation to identify areas for improvement. This involved conducting an in-depth analysis of the current system architecture and developing a customized upgrade strategy.

Years of rapid development had created technical debt that was slowing down progress and limiting scalability. A major challenge was enhancing the connection and communication between the mobile software and the ultrasound hardware.

The existing user interface needed a complete overhaul to meet modern healthcare professional expectations. This meant designing an entirely new user experience that would be intuitive, efficient, and suitable for medical environments where ease of use is critical.

Key challenges

1.
Developing native mobile apps for iOS & Android platforms.
2.
Solving technical debt.
3.
Improving connectivity and communication with hardware.

The Process

During our partnership with Vave, we focused on improving IoT connectivity and implementing innovative UX to make using the device simple and intuitive.

To begin with, our team conducted a comprehensive audit of Vave Health's existing codebase and architecture. Based on these findings, we developed a tailored modernization roadmap prioritizing critical improvements.

React Native was our tech choice to create unified mobile applications for both iOS and Android platforms. This approach ensured consistent functionality and user experience across all devices.

We systematically refactored legacy code, optimized system performance, and implemented best practices to eliminate accumulated technical debt. It created a more stable foundation for future development and improved overall system reliability. To address the issue of better IoT connectivity and data exchange, we optimized communication protocols.

The main part of the process was the UX transformation–we created an entirely new user interface tailored specifically for healthcare professionals. It prioritized intuitive navigation and quick access to critical functions, making the technology more accessible in fast-paced medical environments.

This is how we made it happen:

  • Leveraging React Native to create a single codebase that powers both iOS and Android applications

  • Conducting a deep analysis and thorough review of the existing solution

  • Reducing technical debt, refactoring code and optimizing performance

  • Redesigning the connection between software and ultrasound devices by optimizing communication protocols

  • Creating an entirely new user interface from the ground up, focusing on intuitive workflows and quick access to essential functions

The Outcome

We helped Vave Health transform their platform into an intuitive and user-friendly solution that better serves their mission of making ultrasound technology accessible worldwide.

Vave successfully launched the redesigned product with improved, scalable connectivity. The client received native applications working on Android and iOS devices. That means clinicians can conveniently scan their patients using their own mobile devices and get the results they need. The modern architecture is easier to update for developers and QA specialists. Vave is widely used by medical professionals and students in the US.

The success of this project hinged on:

  • Close collaboration with Vave hardware team based on mutual trust and understanding.

  • Developing a tailored upgrade strategy addressing the core technical and architectural challenges.

  • Building a unified mobile experience for all devices.

  • Introducing innovative UX prioritizing simplicity and intuitiveness, making the device significantly more user-friendly.
