Infinant Health is a biotech company with a powerful mission to change the trajectory of human health by focusing on the infant gut microbiome.

Their research indicates that a critical window exists in early life for establishing beneficial bacteria, such as B. infantis, which plays a crucial role in laying the foundation for lifelong immune and metabolic health.

While their core business is B2B—partnering with health systems and consumer brands—they identified the need for a digital tool for parents. Their mobile app translates complex biological signs into actionable insights for parents, a key part of their digital health medical devices strategy.

The Challenge

Infinant Health's goal was ambitious–to create a mobile app that could analyze an infant's gut microbiome condition without laboratory testing.

Instead, the app would rely on inputs like stool photos, cry recordings, and breastfeeding data captured by parents. This presented a unique set of design and technical hurdles that needed to be solved before development could begin.

The app's UX/UI had to be created for parents of infants—a sleep-deprived user group with little time and often no free hand to navigate a complex application.

A reliable method had to be set up for transferring data, such as audio recordings for cry analysis, from an Apple Watch to an iPhone. Beyond simple tracking, the app needed to be designed to support parents with helpful interventions during a potential baby health crisis.

The Process

We began with a foundational phase of deep discovery to ensure the final product concept would be viable and valuable.

The first step was to analyze the crowded child development app space to find a specific niche for Infinant Health’s scientifically-backed approach.

To effectively communicate the app's main functionalities and visual design, the team built two distinct prototypes: a technical prototype and a no-code prototype. This allowed stakeholders to see, test, and validate the concept from both a technical and user-experience perspective.

The entire design process was centered around the unique needs of the target user. Every screen and interaction was crafted to be simple, quick, and supportive for a parent who may be stressed and multitasking.

The Outcome

The partnership with Monterail provided Infinant Health with the essential strategic assets needed to move forward–a clear and validated path to execution.

The primary deliverables were a complete digital product documentation package, allowing for the immediate start of the development process with a clear roadmap.

Additionally, the research and prototyping phases resulted in business model validation and concrete recommendations for how the new digital product could be successfully brought to market and integrated into their broader mission .
